A Journey of Empowerment: From Local Leadership to the United Nations

By Blessed Ziso

As a proud member of the Teach For Zimbabwe Alumni, I have always believed in the transformative power of education. This belief was deepened when I was selected to join the Teach For All Student Leaders Advisory Council (SLAC) as a mentor to Tafadzwa Dangarembwa. What followed was a journey defined by growth, collaboration, and extraordinary opportunity.

The SLAC programme brought together passionate student leaders from different regions with the aim of strengthening their leadership skills and amplifying their voices in global education discourse. Across a series of online engagements, we explored themes of education, social justice, and community development. Students were also guided through reflective essay writing exercises, where they articulated their visions for change within their communities.

Tafadzwa’s essays consistently stood out. Her clarity of thought, depth of reflection, and strong sense of purpose demonstrated a deep commitment to creating meaningful impact. It was a privilege to support her as she refined her ideas and strengthened her voice.

Our mentorship evolved into a meaningful exchange of ideas. Together, we examined the intersection of education and policy, and how local experiences can inform global conversations. These discussions helped prepare her to engage beyond her immediate context and step confidently into broader spaces of influence.

This journey reached a remarkable milestone when Tafadzwa was selected to attend the 2025 United Nations General Assembly in New York. This achievement is not only a personal milestone for her but also a reflection of the potential of young leaders when given the right support and platform. I am honoured to accompany her as her chaperone and to support her as she shares her perspective on a global stage.

Tafadzwa’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mentorship and intentional investment in young people. It reinforces the belief that when we nurture emerging leaders, we enable them to shape meaningful and lasting change.

As we prepare for this historic opportunity, I look forward to the conversations, connections, and learning that will emerge. This moment is not just about representation at the global level—it is about ensuring that community voices are heard, valued, and amplified.

In conclusion, this opportunity to elevate Tafadzwa’s voice at the United Nations is both a personal and collective victory. It reflects what is possible when education, mentorship, and leadership converge to empower the next generation.
