From Stronger Teachers to Stronger Learners: How Continuous Coaching and Evidence-Based Practice Are Transforming Education in Zimbabwe

By Bright Kwofie

Behind every confident reader, curious mathematician, and engaged classroom lies a teacher whose own learning journey never stopped. Throughout the Teach For Zimbabwe Fellowship, that belief became increasingly evident as coaches and fellows embraced continuous professional development, strengthened their instructional knowledge, and refined their classroom practice. The endline assessment tells a remarkable story, not simply of improved scores, but of educators who are becoming increasingly equipped to unlock the potential of every child they teach. The progress recorded across the program demonstrates that investing in teacher growth creates a ripple effect that reaches every learner sitting in the classroom.

That ripple effect became visible across multiple dimensions of the program. Coaches and fellows demonstrated significant gains in content knowledge and pedagogical understanding. At the same time, students progressed from struggling with basic literacy and numeracy concepts to confidently tackling more advanced reading and mathematical tasks. Classroom observations further revealed stronger instructional practices, healthier classroom cultures, and more intentional teaching approaches. Together, these outcomes paint a powerful picture of a program where educator development, learner achievement, and classroom excellence reinforce one another to create lasting educational transformation.

Strengthening Teachers to Build Better Learning Experiences

The foundation of this transformation was the remarkable growth demonstrated by both coaches and fellows through the Content and Pedagogical Knowledge (CPK) assessments. Between the baseline and endline, coaches achieved an average growth of 27%, while fellows improved by nearly 18%, reflecting the program’s success in deepening instructional expertise. Structured Pedagogy emerged as the strongest area for both groups, with coaches reaching an impressive 97% mastery and fellows recording their highest performance at 77%. Equally encouraging were the significant gains in Reading Theory, Numeracy Theory, and Remedial Support, highlighting educators’ growing confidence in delivering foundational learning that responds to learners’ needs.

As teachers strengthened their professional knowledge, their classroom practice naturally evolved. Classroom observations revealed that by the endline, no fellow remained at the beginner level across the High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) framework, demonstrating that effective instructional practices had become the norm rather than the exception. At the same time, the Teaching as Collective Leadership Competencies (TACL) recorded average scores above 80% across all domains, with Learn & Design and Love & Connect standing out as particularly strong. Even Reflect & Grow, the domain that experienced the greatest improvement, illustrated the program’s commitment to nurturing reflective practitioners who continuously refine their teaching. These stronger instructional practices created the conditions necessary for meaningful learner progress.

Turning Stronger Teaching into Stronger Learning

The impact of improved teaching became increasingly evident in learners’ literacy outcomes. As instructional quality strengthened, students steadily progressed from recognizing individual letters and words to confidently reading complete paragraphs. Paragraph-level reading proficiency more than doubled from baseline to endline, demonstrating significant improvements in foundational literacy. Perhaps most encouraging was the elimination of beginner-level readers in Grades 2 and 3 by the end of the program, a milestone that reflects the effectiveness of intentional reading instruction and targeted learner support. While gains in reading comprehension were more gradual, learners in upper grades continued to demonstrate encouraging improvements, suggesting that stronger foundational skills are beginning to translate into deeper understanding.

This same pattern of progress extended naturally into numeracy, where learners moved beyond simply identifying numbers toward solving increasingly complex mathematical problems. The proportion of students capable of performing multiplication and division grew substantially, with division-level proficiency showing the greatest improvement across program cycles, particularly in the upper grades. Basic number recognition challenges declined significantly, while more learners successfully mastered four-digit number comparison and higher-order mathematical operations. Although a slight increase in beginner-level learners remained in some grades, the overall trajectory clearly pointed toward stronger mathematical understanding and growing learner confidence.

Creating a Lasting Culture of Educational Excellence

These learner gains represent far more than improved assessment results; they demonstrate the powerful relationship between teacher development and student success. When educators receive consistent coaching, strengthen their pedagogical knowledge, and adopt evidence-based instructional practices, classrooms become environments where children can thrive academically and personally. The program’s integrated approach ensured that professional learning was not isolated from classroom realities; instead, every new strategy acquired by coaches and fellows translated directly into richer learning experiences for students.

Looking ahead, the findings offer both encouragement and direction for continued improvement. While the program celebrates impressive achievements in foundational literacy, numeracy, and instructional practice, it also identifies opportunities to strengthen areas such as classroom management, reading comprehension, and higher-level teaching practice. This culture of continuous reflection is one of the program’s greatest strengths. Rather than viewing the endline assessment as the conclusion of a journey, Teach For Zimbabwe sees it as the beginning of an even greater opportunity; to continue developing exceptional educators who inspire confident learners, transform classrooms, and ultimately contribute to a stronger, more equitable education system across Zimbabwe.
