Breaking the Silence: A Courtroom Drama Against Child Marriage at Siansundu High School

In the first term of 2026, Siansundu High School witnessed an extraordinary and thought-provoking awareness campaign led by Justice Genesis Sianchali, a 6th Cohort Fellow with Teach For Zimbabwe. With a mission to confront the persistent challenge of early and child marriage, learners were not simply lectured—they were immersed in a powerful courtroom drama that brought reality to life.

The school assembly hall was transformed into a courtroom setting, complete with a judge’s bench, witnesses, legal representatives, and a silent but attentive “jury” made up of fellow students. The drama centred on a fictional case of a young girl forced into early marriage, her dreams cut short by societal pressures and economic hardships.Learners took on their roles with striking authenticity. The “prosecutor” passionately argued for the girl’s right to education and protection, highlighting the long-term consequences of child marriage, including poverty, health risks, and lost opportunities. The “defence” presented the harsh realities faced by some families, such as financial struggles and cultural expectations, creating a balanced and deeply engaging narrative.

At the heart of the drama was the testimony of the “victim.” Her emotional account resonated across the room, painting a vivid picture of interrupted education, emotional distress, and the loss of childhood. The atmosphere grew intense as learners leaned in, fully absorbed in the unfolding case.

Justice Genesis Sianchali guided the process, ensuring that every argument connected back to real-life implications. Rather than dictating conclusions, he encouraged learners to think critically, question norms, and reflect on their own roles within the community.

The climax came when the “judge” delivered a verdict—a firm stance against child marriage, emphasising that every child deserves the right to education, protection, and a future shaped by choice, not circumstance. The hall erupted into thoughtful applause, not just for the performance, but for the message it carried.

Following the drama, an open discussion allowed learners to share their views. Many expressed a deeper understanding of the issue, while others committed to becoming advocates for change within their families and communities. The activity sparked meaningful conversations that extended beyond the classroom. This innovative approach proved that education is most impactful when it is experienced. By blending creativity with advocacy, the campaign did more than raise awareness—it empowered learners to become voices of change.

As the term progresses, Siansundu High School continues to stand as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that through education, dialogue, and courage, harmful practices like child marriage can be challenged and ultimately eradicated.

Together, we can break the silence and protect the future.
