Sharing the Joy of Baking at Gurure Primary School-Nyaradzo Mariwo

Recently, I had the privilege of sharing my passion for baking with the enthusiastic learners of Gurure Primary School. What made this experience even more special was the collaborative spirit it was built on—I was supported by a fellow teacher who graciously offered his guidance and baking skills to help bring this idea to life.

Together, we set out to teach the learners how to bake pies—an activity that quickly became much more than just a lesson in the kitchen. The students were initially surprised (and delightfully curious!) to discover that their male teacher was not only involved but also highly skilled in baking. That moment became a powerful one—shattering stereotypes and challenging perceptions about who belongs where, and doing what.

The energy and excitement in the room were contagious. From rolling out dough to carefully measuring ingredients, the learners were fully engaged, soaking in every step and every story we shared.

Our baking journey culminated in a spirited competition, where these young chefs showcased their new skills at the DASAF competitions. Watching them beam with confidence as they presented their work was nothing short of inspiring.

As I reflect on this experience, I’m filled with a deep sense of pride and gratitude. Sharing what I love with the next generation not only brought them joy but reminded me of the power of collaboration, creativity, and believing in our learners’ potential. I look forward to more opportunities to build, teach, and grow—one pie at a time
