Perseverance Nhanho – 3rd Cohort

Being a third cohort fellow of Teach for Zimbabwe is my great privilege. My placement is at Nandi Primary School in the Malilangwe area where I am teaching Grade 5 pupils. The learners are eager to learn despite having been disturbed by COVID-19. I introduced climate education to staff members, grade 5 pupils, and finally the whole school.

After educating staff members on climate change one teacher offered me a variety of trees and flowers to grow at our school. I hired a car to bring these trees from Triangle where the teacher resides from Nandi Primary School. The trees include Palm trees that we will grow at the school approach road, shade trees as well as indigenous trees like muroro, muonde, munyii and flowers.

Activities done thus far include;

  • Growing lawn and shrubs in front of the Headmistress’s office
  • Collecting tree leaves for mulching plants
  • Clearing land for growing trees in the school orchard

I am grateful for being a TFZ fellow teaching in marginalized areas. This opportunity has unlocked other interests in me that were hidden and I am now proud to say I am an environmental changer together with the club that l have formed at Nandi Primary School.

All thanks to Dr. Siwela and Mr. Edson Dongo for raising awareness of climate change.
