Daylight Chengo – 2nd Cohort
In life, there is that one duty which one feels to fulfil, even without being told to do so. Daylight Chengo of Teach for Zimbabwe (TFZ) believes she feels it a ‘’call of nature’’ to express herself through painting and drawing. She also delights in giving her time to imparting the skill of mixing paints to create pieces of art. She embraces the need to express ideas, thoughts and feelings. Chengo finds it necessary to use her resting time to do all this but does however not feel exhausted because she does what she likes most.
Apart from some merits in Art which she got from her former school, Queen Elizabeth High, she also scooped 1st position and a certificate award by the National Arts Gallery in the ‘’Tavatose Art Exhibitions’’ 2012.
As a Christian, Chengo, never stops relating her artworks to how God, through Moses, gave artistic instructions to the Israelites when they were designing Aaron’s holy garment –Exodus 39 vs 1. In other words, she believes it is God who enables every effort she makes in creating her own artworks, teaching other students or helping out student from teacher’s colleges with their tasks.
2022 May 09, saw Chengo commencing her journey as a Combined Science teacher, under TFZ, at Chindenga Secodary School in the remote areas of Mutoko. Realizing she had an unleashed talent, apart from being a science pedagogue, she could not sit down but besides she took the issue to the school authorities where she requested for permission to start an art club that could raise the flag of the school high.
Currently, the fellow has:
- Managed to create an art club
- Managed to source activities for the club members e.g exhibitions
- Managed to create own artworks
- Managed to deliver lessons to some of the club members which enables them to sit for the ZIMSEC Examinations.
The fellow plans to create a website page that will attract artists and art critics from different parts of the nation that they may be awarded and ranked.
